Design and analysis of a one-dimensional sea surface simulator using the sum-of-sinusoids principle

2015

Simulators for sea surface waves are useful for many practical applications, such as the construction of offshore structures and ocean surface animations. This paper studies three methods for the design of one-dimensional sea surface waves simulators with given wave spectra using the sum-of-sinusoids (SOS) principle. The wave spectrum provides insight into important statistical properties of the sea surface waves, such as the autocorrelation function (ACF) of the sea surface waves, significant wave height, and the moments of the spectrum. The sea surface simulator is designed by applying the concept of deterministic channel modelling on two main classical wave spectra, namely the Pierson-Mo…

Past and Current Climate Change

2008

This section describes long-term observed climatic changes in atmospheric parameters. The focus is on surface climate conditions, but changes in atmospheric circulation are discussed as they often are behind climatic variability seen on regional and local scales. For a summary introduction on mean atmospheric states and conditions in the Baltic Sea Basin see Annex 1.2 with sections on the general atmospheric circulation (A.1.2.1), surface air temperature (A.1.2.2), precipitation (A.1.2.3), clouds (A.1.2.4), and global radiation (A.1.2.5).

Experimental and numerical investigations of a two-body floating-point absorber wave energy converter in regular waves

2019

Abstract This paper presents experimental and numerical studies on the hydrodynamics of a two-body floating-point absorber (FPA) wave energy converter (WEC) under both extreme and operational wave conditions. In this study, the responses of the WEC in heave, surge, and pitch were evaluated for various regular wave conditions. For extreme condition analysis, we assume the FPA system has a survival mode that locks the power-take-off (PTO) mechanism in extreme waves, and the WEC moves as a single body in this scenario. A series of Reynolds-averaged Navier–Stokes (RANS) simulations was performed for the survival condition analysis, and the results were validated with the measurements from exper…

A Comparison between Drifter and X-Band Wave Radar for Sea Surface Current Estimation

2016

This paper deals with exploitation of the wave radar system for sea surface current estimation in a coastal zone. In particular, we present the results of the processing of the radar data collected by an X-band marine radar installed in Capo Granitola site, which is located in the south-west part of Sicily, on 15 May 2015. The effectiveness of the data processing is analyzed by comparing the wave radar estimated sea surface current with that provided by the Lagrangian drifters along its movement trajectory. During the measurement campaign, three drifter releases are carried out and for each one the comparison is provided in terms of the mean error and standard deviation. In addition, we rep…

HF radar for wind waves measurements in the Malta-Sicily Channel

2018

Abstract The CALYPSO HF radar network is a permanent and fully operational observing system currently composed of four CODAR SeaSonde stations. The system is providing real-time hourly maps of sea surface currents and waves data in the Malta-Sicily Channel. The present work aims to compare significant wave height measurements by HF Radar to wave data from numerical models and satellite altimeter. This is the first time that this set of wave data are analysed since the four HF radars were installed between 2012 and 2015. Results suggest that CODAR HF Radar wave data are a reliable source of wave information even in the case of extreme events, providing an avenue to improve and complete the o…
